It was an age of push button telephones, and cable TV.

My sister and I were conversing in the kitchen while her 5 year old son was in the family room watching cable TV.

The phone rang. I answered. The lady on the other end of the line asked if there was a small child in the house. I replied “yes, why”.  She asked if that child knew how to call 911 in case of emergency?

By then my sister was in a panic. The lady on the other end of the phone then proceeded to tell us that a small child just called 911 from this number to let her know that the cable went out!

My sister turned red faced furious and I rolled on the floor in laughter.

I guess my sister didn’t quite qualify to her young child, just what an emergency was!

  1. Oh my gosh, I remember doing something similar as a young child. Not so much because something happened but because I was curious about what 9-1-1 was. So I just dialed it and then quickly hung up, not realizing they could track our number and call us back! I was mortified when they called and my mom confronted me about it.

  2. Yeeikes. I called once. I remember the police officer holding my on his hip because I got scared when they arrived. That was many moons ago.
